Reducing Nitrogen Loss Can Help Growers Lower Fertilizer Costs
No matter the conditions, protecting applied nitrogen is an important part of a strong nutrient management plan.

That is especially true when input supply chain issues have tightened budgets for the upcoming growing season.

“If there's ever been a time for growers to utilize nitrogen stabilizers, this is it,” said Dr. Greg Schwab, vice president of agronomy and innovation at Koch. “It is essential to stabilize and protect every pound of nitrogen that you apply this year to achieve the highest yield potential in the field.”

There’s some good news on that front: a recent soil study shows Duromide, combined with NBPT, reduces ammonia volatilization loss from urea by up to 33 percent compared to NBPT alone. Results like that can help growers capitalize on their nitrogen investment by protecting what they apply to their fields.

Active ingredient shows improved protection
Developed by Koch Agronomic Services (Koch), Duromide is found in ANVOL® nitrogen stabilizer. The peer-reviewed study concludes that Duromide, working in tandem with NBPT to increase nitrogen protection efficiency for urea and UAN.
“Peer-reviewed articles are the gold standard of research when it comes to a new technology,” said Schwab. “Between the amount of data required and the review process, it generally takes 2-3 years to achieve this accomplishment. Koch is proud to have this published research to showcase the superior performance of Duromide, the active ingredient in ANVOL, compared to stabilizers that rely on the older NBPT technology.”
The authors of the article, published in the Revista Brasileira de Ciencia do Solo, noted the new Duromide stabilizer has a different chemical structure than NBPT, making the molecule more stable. The soil study demonstrated Duromide allowed more time for nitrogen fertilizer to be incorporated into the soil by precipitation or irrigation and consequently reducing nitrogen losses by ammonia volatilization.
Koch’s ANVOL stabilizer is a unique solution to address ammonia volatilization. With optimal amounts of two active ingredients working together, ANVOL provides a longer duration of protection from nitrogen loss. This extended window of protection provides a higher return on investment for growers.

ANVOL driven by Duromide
Chad Weckerly knows this firsthand. Weckerly is a grower and retail fertilizer supplier in North Dakota and he’s seen what ANVOL, driven by Duromide, has done for him and his growers.
“I definitely believe that Duromide is a superior active ingredient to what we were receiving in our NBPT-only stabilizer products,” said Weckerly. “Knowing that I can count on that, ANVOL allows us a much greater application window. That way we can have the best chance of success.”
Performance is the key for Weckerly and the growers he works with. And his experience with ANVOL speaks volumes.

“The key is that it performs in the field how it’s supposed to perform in the field,” said Weckerly. “I do not know any better advice or way to pass on the benefits to ANVOL than to say that’s what I use on my own farm on my own acres.”
